The barrier islands in the chain are, from east to west: Dauphin Island, Petit Bois Island, Horn Island, Ship Island, and Cat Island. The islands are low sand bodies situated on a relatively broad Holocene sand platform that extends 70 mi ( km) from Dauphin Island on the east to Cat Island on the west. Dauphin Island is a popular tourist destination. MISSISSIPPI: Gov. Haley Barbour says oil is hitting the state for the first time. Barbour said Tuesday that a two-mile long, three-feet wide strand of caramel-colored oil has been found on Petit Bois Island, a barrier island .
